Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries that require flush-mounted markers typically publish specific regulations governing marker dimensions, thickness, acceptable materials, and surface finishes. Maximum width limits for companion flat markers are particularly important to confirm before designing a stone for two people — some cemeteries specify a maximum width per plot; others accommodate wider markers if the plot spans two adjacent spaces. Couple Marker Guide confirms all relevant regulations at your cemetery before designing your flat companion marker.

Foundation Requirements

Flat headstones are set on prepared beds beneath the grass level — compacted gravel, leveling sand, or concrete depending on the cemetery's specification. Proper setting ensures the marker lies flat without rocking and does not develop a subsurface void over time. Our installation crew prepares settings to the cemetery's stated method, using mechanical equipment to ensure the flat stone sits level in all directions before the soil is restored around the perimeter.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-affiliated cemeteries in New Jersey that designate flat-marker sections typically welcome companion flat headstones for married couples, including those with religious symbols. Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Orthodox cemeteries throughout Morris, Bergen, and Essex counties all accommodate flat companion markers. We confirm the appropriateness of all imagery with the cemetery's office before production begins.

Companion / Double Flat Headstone

A flat headstone for a married couple is a horizontal granite slab designed to carry both spouses' names, dates, and any shared inscription or symbol within a single, unified polished surface. The most common format at Couple Marker Guide is a single wide flat die — one stone wide enough to accommodate both inscriptions with a central design element between them. This configuration produces a memorial that reads as one unified statement rather than two markers placed side by side. A second format uses two individual flat stones set directly adjacent — each carrying one person's inscription — for cemeteries that limit the width of any single marker. Both formats are available from Couple Marker Guide in standard and custom dimensions, produced from American-made granite in the colors appropriate to the design. The polished upper face of a dark granite flat marker makes lettering and symbols legible from a standing position in any light condition. Lettering style — serif, script, block — is selected by the family during the design consultation. A central heart, cross, shared epitaph, or nature-based symbol between the two name panels completes the composition. All flat companion headstones are produced to the cemetery-compliant specifications confirmed before production begins.

Granite Options

American-made granite for flat companion headstones is selected for the quality of its polished face — the surface that will be seen and read after the marker is installed. India Black granite is the most popular choice for flat markers: its consistent dark surface produces maximum contrast with carved lettering and symbols, and its fine grain holds the high polish that makes it legible in varying light conditions. Mountain Gray presents a quieter, more neutral surface that suits a wide range of design aesthetics. Dakota Mahogany, with its warm reddish-brown character, adds an organic quality that some families find more personal for a companion memorial. All three are available for comparison at our Morris County showroom.

Custom Design Process

The design process for a flat companion headstone at Couple Marker Guide begins with understanding the two people whose names it will carry. Consultations are conducted in English, Russian, or Polish at our Morris County showroom or by phone. We discuss both individuals' names and dates, the cemetery's dimensional requirements, the preferred stone color and lettering style, the central design element, and any pre-planning considerations if one partner is still living. From that conversation, our design team produces a scaled drawing of the marker's face showing every element for your approval before carving begins.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Flat companion headstones pass through six stages at Couple Marker Guide. Step one: the consultation, documenting both individuals' details, the cemetery's current regulations, and all design preferences. Step two: the scaled design drawing, showing both name panels and all decorative elements, produced for your approval before production begins. Step three: American-made granite selection — the slab is evaluated for surface quality on the polished face. Step four: hand-carving — lettering, central design element, borders, and symbols are carved by our artisans with the approved drawing as reference. Step five: finishing — letter fills, polishing of the face, and inspection against the drawing. Step six: installation — the completed marker is transported to the cemetery, the setting is prepared by our crew to the cemetery's specification, the stone is set level and flush with the surrounding ground, and the installation is photographed.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“The cemetery where my parents are buried requires flat markers. Couple Marker Guide produced a beautiful black granite companion stone with both their names and the phrase from their wedding that meant everything to us. It looks exactly right — understated, dignified, and permanent.” — Richard, Monmouth County NJ
